A short history...
On the first morning or our honeymoon, we awoke at the beautiful Grano de Oro where we shared in our first of many Costa Rican breakfasts. We sat outside on the patio which was adorned with trees and fresh flowers. The cool morning air felt great as we drank our first cup of Cafe Britt. Fresh fruit, blackberry jam and breads...so yummy. At 11:00, our driver arrived to bring us to our next destination, the Peace Lodge. Within the hour we were at the amazing La Paz Waterfall Gardens and the Peace Lodge. Our room was named Mycelia, after a butterfly. More impressive, however, was our name, hung from a shingle in Lithograph font. It really felt like, "Welcome home, Singers." The Peace Lodge was a tropical paradise, both inside the room and outside. From our room we saw the cloud forest and heard the five waterfalls. Inside the room we luxuriated in not one, but two hot tubs (one on deck and one in the cavernous bathroom). After three beautiful days we traveled dusty roads to Villa Caletas. With sunsets at the amphitheatre, breakfast overlooking the ocean, and trips to the surf town of Jaco Beach, Villa Caletas could not have been more different from nature haven of the Peace Lodge: Corinthian columns, cherub wall sconces, wait staff in formal attire. As different as the hotels were, we continued to be amazed by the natural beauty. Day 7 brought a crazy 5 hour car ride to the Eco-paradise of Punta Islita. Beaches, fruity drinks, clear blue skies, hammocks, dinner on the ocean... three days of peace and beauty. We took a horse-back ride through the mountains at sunset, zip-lined through the canopy, and rode ATVs around the local villages and beaches. On March 13, 2005 we took at 45 minute flight on the 18-seater Nature Air to the Grano de Oro Hotel. Even though we had only been there for one night nine days earlier, we felt like we were coming home. The splash of the fountains, the beautiful flowers, the courteous hotel staff made the stay wonderful. We wandered around San Jose for a couple of hours, checking out both local grocery stores (the Mas por Menos, and the Prix) looking for good deals on Costa Rican coffee. The area around the Grano de Oro is nothing special, but the city was a great contrast from the beaches and cloud forests of the preceding 9 days. We had our one year anniversary dinner at the top-rated Grano de Oro restaurant. The food was delicious. A perfect vacation. Enjoy the pictures. p.s. I created a "photo movie" from the pictures. The
.wmv file is somewhat large (7mb), but the sound of the music and
the motion of the photos convey some of the romance of our trip. |
