Jonathan
Randi
Engagement

We
know so many love stories start this way, but we met at a smoky bar called
"The Elephant Room."
It was a cold Monday night in February 1999 when Jonathan went to the
same Monday night Jazz Jam he'd been attending for 6 years. Randi had
heard from a man named Philip Marshall that "The Elephant Room"
was the place to get into Austin's Jazz scene. "The way to start,"
Philip said, "is with the Monday night Jazz Jam." So, Randi
went to watch what went down at the Elephant Room. All of a sudden, a
man holding drumsticks with a lion's mane for hair appeared to be waving
at Philip. "Jonathan Singer, this is Randi Beckman. She is here to
sing tonight," Philip said. We shook hands and exchanged pleasantries
and then Jonathan was called up to the stage to play drums. Because she
was nervous, Randi did not sing that night. She did, however return the
next week with the intent to sing. Jonathan noticed this devastatingly
cute woman in overalls sitting alone at a table up toward the front of
the stage. "Didn't we meet last week? My name is Jonathan."
Randi replied that Philip might have introduced them. Jonathan invited
Randi to join he and his friend Donald at their table. Here is where the
laughter starts. We laughed the whole night. Then, we exchanged email
addresses and emailed for a month or so. In a moment of awe-inspiring
courage, Randi asked Jonathan on their first date; a Passover Seder on
the top of Mount Bonnell. It was a hippie Seder where everyone had a different
siddur. We've met many times since then...
